How the daily puzzle is generated

AO3dle uses the current UTC date and the round number to create each Daily matchup. Your local session does not change the character pair. If two players open round 4 on the same UTC date, they receive the same two characters even if they are in different time zones.

The next challenge begins when the UTC date changes. Depending on where you live, that may not be midnight in your local time zone. If the puzzle appears to reset earlier or later than expected, compare your local time with 00:00 UTC.

This shared setup is what makes Daily scores meaningful. Players face the same sequence rather than separate random rounds, while the published character data snapshot keeps the popularity values consistent.

The 10-round difficulty progression

The Daily Challenge becomes harder in three fixed stages:

The early rounds usually feature characters with broader recognition. The middle rounds demand closer fandom knowledge, while the final three draw from the niche Hard pool. Every Daily round still uses two choices, unlike Hard mode, which presents three characters with all counts hidden.

Treat the first three rounds as a chance to establish a streak. The final rounds are more uncertain, but their larger difficulty multiplier also makes them the best opportunity to add substantial points.

How Daily Challenge scoring works

A correct answer combines four scoring components:

Round score = difficulty score + speed bonus + streak bonus + close-call bonus

Every correct answer starts from 100 base points, multiplied by the winning character's tier:

The speed bonus begins at up to 50 points and falls over the first 10 seconds. The streak bonus adds 10 points for each consecutive correct-answer level after the first, up to 100 points. The close-call bonus adds up to 50 points when the two popularity counts are close.

A practical strategy for a higher Daily score

1. Use the visible count as an anchor

One character's count is shown before you answer. First identify its tier: at least 20,000 is Easy, 5,000-19,999 is Medium, and below 5,000 is Hard. Then ask whether the hidden character is likely to sit above or below that anchor.

2. Compare fandom context, not just name recognition

A famous character is not automatically the more popular AO3 character. Consider the size and age of the fandom, whether the character is central to popular relationships, and whether the displayed name may cover several versions or sources.

3. Protect the streak when uncertain

Fast answers can earn up to 50 bonus points, but a wrong answer scores zero and resets your streak. When the choice is close, spending a few extra seconds can be worth more than preserving the full speed bonus.

4. Expect a shift after rounds 3 and 7

Rounds 4 and 8 begin new difficulty tiers. Recalibrate when you reach them: Medium and Hard characters may be less recognizable, while their absolute popularity counts are lower than those in the previous stage.

5. Finish before judging the result

Daily mode measures both accuracy and points. Two players can answer the same number correctly but finish with different scores because of speed, streaks, difficulty, and close-call bonuses. Complete all 10 rounds before comparing performances.

Sharing and submitting your result

After round 10, AO3dle shows your correct-answer total and final point score. The Share button copies a compact result containing:

• Your score out of 10
• Your total points
• A 10-square grid of correct and incorrect answers

The grid lets you compare the shape of a run without revealing the character matchups. You can also submit the point total to the Daily leaderboard from the completion screen.
